From Global Grids to Intelligent Infrastructures: The Future of Global Science

Enabling Resilient Collaboration in the AI and Quantum Era

As AI, quantum computing, and other emerging and disruptive technologies transform the way scientific research is conducted, the infrastructure supporting global science is entering a new era. Over more than two decades, grids, distributed computing, cloud, and data infrastructures have enabled researchers around the world to collaborate across institutional and national boundaries. The next generation of scientific infrastructure must build on this foundation while becoming increasingly intelligent, heterogeneous, trustworthy, and resilient, yet remaining globally accessible.

ISGC 2027 will explore how scientific communities can navigate this transition and develop infrastructures that enable AI-driven discovery, integrate emerging computing paradigms such as quantum computing and photonics, and support large-scale scientific collaboration. Particular attention will be given to the convergence of established and emerging computing technologies, with AI increasingly embedded both in scientific workflows and in infrastructure operation, and to the practical challenges of integrating and operating such heterogeneous environments in real scientific settings. Furthermore, the symposium will address how these infrastructures can support the generation of trustworthy, verifiable scientific knowledge, preserving data integrity and provenance while mitigating the risks arising from unreliable or misleading AI-generated results.

The symposium will also examine how global scientific collaboration can remain open while becoming more resilient and sustainable in an increasingly complex technological, societal, and geopolitical environment. This includes balancing the need for data and compute sovereignty and stronger national and regional capabilities with continued international collaboration and broad access to advanced computing and data resources. It will also address cybersecurity and operational resilience, multilingual and culturally aware AI, energy efficiency and environmental sustainability, and the broader impact of AI and emerging technologies on scientific practice, the research workforce, and society.

Building on the ISGC 2026 discussions of trustworthy infrastructures, data sovereignty, and secure research collaboration, ISGC 2027 will look beyond individual technologies to how the next generation of intelligent and heterogeneous research infrastructures can advance scientific discovery and expand resilient global collaboration in the AI and quantum era.

The program spans 10 Scientific Subjects: Physics & Engineering Applications, Health & Life Sciences, Earth & Environmental Sciences & Biodiversity, Social Sciences & Humanities, Virtual Research Environments, FAIR & Trusted Data, Networks & Security Infrastructures, Cloud & Virtualization, Converging High-Performance Computing, and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Through keynotes, workshops, international project reports, and peer-reviewed contributions, ISGC 2026 continues to strengthen global collaborations, cultivate future scientific leaders, and bridge cutting-edge technologies with societal responsibility.

We warmly invite the global research and industry community to join this premier event where innovation, trust, and international collaboration meet to shape tomorrow’s breakthroughs.
